Raising the minimum wage in Michigan got one step closer Tuesday after the state Board of Canvassers approved One Fair Wage Michigan's petition.
What that means is One Fair Wage Michigan can start canvassing for signatures to get their proposal on the November 2018 ballot.
They will need about 252,000 signatures to qualify.
Not only is the goal to raise the minimum wage in Michigan but to also eliminate the tipped wage.
The policy proposed by the campaign would gradually raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour for non-tipped employees by 2022.
For tipped employees, the wage would reach $12 by 2024. Starting in 2019, the minimum wage would be $10 for non-tipped employees and would be $4.80 for tipped employees.
The current minimum wage has two pay tiers and is at $8.90 for non-tipped employees and $3.38 for tipped employees.
