Police believe string of auto dealer thefts are connected

Posted

Police are investigating another theft at a Michigan car dealership. This time, dozens of tires were stolen from cars on a lot in Northern Michigan.

It happened over the weekend at Fernelius Ford in Cheboygan. The dealership says the wheels were taken off nine cars. The loss of tires and damage could total thousands of dollars. Police believe it could be a part of a larger string of thefts.

Undersheriff Tim Cook, Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department said, "This is going to be more than one or two people. This is going to be a group of people coming into the dealership with some sort of a lookout system and loading these tires up into a large vehicle, a van or a box type truck in order to get this stuff out of here."

Similar thefts have happened in Livingston, Oakland, Ogemaw and Macomb Counties. This latest incident in Cheboygan is the farthest north it's happened.
