Brian McCardel, M.D., a Lansing native, is Sparrow’s 2017 Physician of the Year.
I. Carol Nwelue, M.D., Medical Director of the Sparrow Medical Group Adult Hospitalist Service, received the Sparrow Physician Leadership Award.
They, along with four others inducted into Sparrow’s Physicians Hall of Fame, were honored during the recent Sparrow Physician Recognition Dinner at the University Club of Michigan State University.
Sparrow is proud to recognize some of the more than 950 Physicians who are transforming care in the mid-Michigan region. Sparrow Physicians, with their everyday actions, put the needs of our Patients first.
Dr. McCardel, of Okemos, is a leading orthopedic surgeon whose community and professional activities range from being longtime chief of Sparrow’s Orthopedic Surgery Section to co-founding the Great Lakes Health Connect health information exchange.
“My hope would be that Physicians coming after me will be engaged in the community at large, using their unique position to do more than just practice here,” said Dr. McCardel, who was born at what was then-St. Lawrence Hospital.
Dr. Nwelue’s parents were born and raised in Nigeria; her mother was a Nurse and her father planned to be a Physician before pursuing a career in business. The Okemos resident has excelled at numerous key positions at Sparrow and has been recognized for her innovation in leadership and practice management.
Inductees into Sparrow’s Physician Hall of Fame can be nominated by colleagues or members of the community. This year’s inductees include:
* Shyam Bhupalam, M.D., a Nephrologist who is currently Medical Director of the Sparrow Hospital Dialysis Unit.
