Local Girl Scouts Troop Delivers Care Packages to Patients at Breslin Cancer Center

LANSING, Mich. — Girl Scouts from Troop #30197 out of Potterville delivered more than 75 care packages they spent hours working on and handed them out to patients receiving cancer treatment.

“The girls each needed to invest 50 hours of community service to the project; however, there is probably a total of 400 hours spent on this project between planning, fundraising, and sewing the activity bags,” said Brandy Thompson, one of the scout leaders and mom to one of the Girl Scouts.

The troop has been working on this project since August and has been reading books about cancer to learn more about what patients are going through. This understanding helped the girls when it came time to make the activity bags, which included things like lip balm, blankets, coloring books, playing cards, and hard candies to help ease nausea, which patients receiving cancer treatments can experience.

“The main thing with cancer is to not be afraid of it and to accept it,” said Kathleen Pettigrew, a oncology patient at Breslin Cancer Center. “It means a lot that these girls would take the time to make these activity bags. This is something we need — the goodness, kindness, love, and teamwork it took to make these.”

While the activity bags made the oncology patient’s day, it also had an effect on the Girl Scouts. “I feel so happy and close to tears, and we have only delivered bags to one patient so far,” said Phoebe Thompson, one of the Girl Scout from Troop #30197. “Seeing our project that we have been working on make an impact on the patients’ lives makes me feel good.”
