LANSING, Mich. — As McLaren Greater Lansing celebrates National Nurses Week, hospital leaders and staff gathered to honor Abbie Sheets, RN, with the 2019 Nursing Excellence Award. The award is given annually to a registered nurse who exemplifies excellence in practice, education, leadership, and community involvement.
Sheets has worked for McLaren Greater Lansing for 17 years, starting her career in the lab while she was in nursing school at Michigan State University. “I loved it, and I’ve never looked back,” said Sheets.
Today, Sheets works on the medical-surgery and pediatrics unit at McLaren Greater Lansing hospital, where she uses her experience and caring personality to make sure that patients and their families understand everything about their plan of care.
In her nomination, Sheets’ supervisor said, “She loves to show others the best way to do things from her experiences. She is methodical in how she follows the process of getting the care for a patient completed while making them feel safe. She is a great teacher for her patients, families, and coworkers. I would want her to be my nurse if ever there were a need.”
Sheets was drawn to nursing from a young age because of a personal experience with a family member who required home care. “We’re all called to nursing through a personal reason,” said Sheets. “That’s something that keeps me engaged and focused, and I don’t think for a minute that I’m not exactly where I should be right now.”
