Buying candy is no cheap feat. But one retail expert tells 7 Action News if you play your cards right, you’ll have plenty to pass out and still have plenty of money to spare.

If you’ve noticed Halloween candy prices going up, you're not alone. It's certainly more expensive than it’s been in the past.

According to the National Retail Federation, candy sales this year are expected to increase, topping $2.6 billion.

But retail expert Sara Skirboll says there are ways to buy and be on a budget.

Her first tip? Go bulk or go home.

"Definitely buy the hundred pack and not the ten pack, because you’re going to get more bang for your buck," said Skirboll of retail discount service Retail Me Not.

That’s good practice if you expect lots of visitors. But also think about the kind of candy you pick. Chocolate is always more expensive.

"Sugar-based candy is generally less expensive, Smarties, so if you want to save a bit of cash this is one way to do it," she said.

And If you haven’t purchased your Halloween candy yet, waiting last minute could work in your favor.

"If you can wait, and have the ability to go on the 31st, do so because you’re certainly going to see it discounted," she added, and possibly by as much as 50 percent.

But how about where you should buy?

Experts say places like Target and warehouses like Costco or Sam's Club are going to be most competitive.
