LANSING, Mich. — Tom Crawford is proud of his Lansing roots. That’s why he created a weekly Facebook video series to share the city’s rich history with the community.
The idea popped in Crawford’s head a couple years ago.
“Lansing is my roots,” Crawford said. “It’s got a historic element that I wanted to embrace with my followers on Facebook.”
Crawford wasn’t tech savvy when he started the series, "Tom’s Takes," but was determined to teach himself how to produce videos.
One of his favorites is the video he did about the old Eastern High School, his alma mater. When he posted it in a Facebook group for alumni of the school from the 1970s, the video quickly racked up thousands of views.
From Clara’s Lansing Station to Bill Knapp’s family restaurant, Crawford’s video series transports viewers back to a time when the doors of these landmarks were still open.
“Everybody has a remembrance of that and I like to activate that and we all share it together,” Crawford said.
In the comment threads underneath the videos, people reconnect with old friends and relive fond memories. Crawford says making those virtual bonds is more important than ever.
“The past 11 months for all of us have been extremely challenging with COVID,” Crawford said. “I think it’s almost like a release to go back in time when things were normal.”
