The Macomb County Health Department confirmed Thursday a Bank of America at 45194 Romeo Plank Road had an exposure to the measles virus.
Health officials say that anyone who visited the location between noon and 2 p.m. on March 19 may have been exposed.
- Experts say confirmed cases of measles in Oakland County may just be tip of the iceberg
- Ask Dr. Nandi: When should we really be worried about the measles?
There are 22 total cases of measles confirmed in metro Detroit. Oakland and Wayne counties have all been exposed to the viral infection.
Measles, which is extremely contagious, can be prevented through the two-dose MMR vaccine. The vaccine is generally given when a child is 12-months old.
According to Dr. Camille Sabella of the Cleveland Clinic, while the first dose is usually effective on its own, a small number of children rely on the second dose.
"The first dosage is usually given right at twelve months; and it’s usually given in the form of measles, mumps, rubella, or the MMR vaccine. Most people respond to that – about ninety-five percent of children who get the first dose respond very well. The five percent that do not respond well usually respond to a second dose," he said.
The recommendation of a two-dose vaccine wasn't standard until the 1990s, so adults born before then may have only received a single dose.
If you're unsure whether or not you received both doses, you should check with healthcare provider.
