Students at FlexTech High School in Brighton have now been in class for two weeks. The school is doing a hybrid schedule to allow for social distancing, with two days of in-person learning and 3 days of virtual learning.
Since Friday is a virtual learning day WXYZ spoke to a school leader and students about how it is going virtually.
They say when the school year started they felt stressed and nervous.
“When it is a way of school that you have never done before, that no one has done before, it was definitely something that was stressful,” said Jacob Hale, a senior. “Now that the first two weeks are over its definitely a lot more relaxing.”
“I honestly expected it to be super different and was kind of nervous, but I feel like through this whole thing we have gotten used to this. So it didn’t feel that weird,” said Ruby Goldsworthy, also a senior at Flex Tech High.
“It was like opening up a brand new school on the first day of school,” said Nick Wasmer, Flex Tech High School Brighton School Leader.
Wasmer said administrators worked more hours than ever putting together new policies, new schedules, training, and getting technology in place.
The district live streams all in-person classes, so that if a student feels more comfortable learning virtually, they can.
Wasmer shared pictures of classes during these first two weeks. You can see students are wearing masks and practicing social distancing.
“I have been able to get like enough academic learning and socializing, but also staying safe and distance too,” said Corey Kerr, a student.
It is really refreshing to see everybody follow the rules and work together to make everything work. I really appreciated that and thought that was cool,” said Goldsworthy.
“There was a lot of apprehension and nerves about entering the school year and I have got to be honest, that was on our end too. What are the students going to do, how are they going to react? We have been very impressed,” said Wasmer.
