LANSING, Mich. — As the fall 2020 semester reaches the one-month mark, LCC continues to emphasize remote learning and work, with the exception of limited hands-on classes and essential workers on campus.
The college made the decision to focus on online learning to ensure the wellbeing of our campus community remains our top priority.
Switching to an online-only environment in March has not come without its challenges, but our students and employees have adapted well. In addition to following all college wide safety standards, every face-to-face or hybrid course was required to develop a safety plan that aligns with LCC’s Business Resumption Plan [lcc.edu]. Depending on the specific needs of their course, faculty and staff have implemented protocols like wearing additional PPE, regularly disinfecting equipment and the classroom, and scheduling students to maintain limited numbers within the labs.
“We are very fortunate to have lab equipment and machinery that was already physically distanced beyond guidelines set by the CDC,” said Gregory Butts, a professor of applied manufacturing technologies at LCC’s West Campus. Butts teaches students who are taking critical hands-on courses. “We disinfect each piece of machinery and any hand tools used after each use. When a student has completed work on a machine they place a red flag on the work surface to show others that the machine cannot be used until it has been disinfected.”
LCC student employee Hannah Locke said the college’s health and safety protocols help her feel at ease in her work. “I sit at the front desk in the Health and Human Services Building and I make sure each person who comes into the building has completed the daily COVID-19 health screening,” she said. “I feel safe while I am on campus and I think LCC has done everything that they can by putting safety measures in place. It becomes the responsibility of individuals to follow those rules and to be careful.”
Locke is also a student in the Sign Language Interpreter Program, and said the dedication of faculty has made the transition to remote learning as easy as possible. “Since our program went fully online in March, our fabulous professors have been working nonstop to make the transition smooth and to get us as close to the in-person experience as they can.”A robust commitment to safety by those who are on campus and those still learning and working from home is needed to protect ourselves and others. All of us can play a role in preventing the spread of infection and help keep all STARS safe!
- Anyone coming to campus or a clinical site is required to complete a daily health screening [apollo.lcc.edu] before arriving. Anyone not coming to campus or a clinical site should not complete this screening.
- Wear a face covering or mask while on campus and at clinical sites, during study group sessions, gatherings, etc.
- Physical distance by maintaining a space of at least six feet between individuals. Please do not congregate before or after class or clinicals and remember to practice these tips during study group sessions, gatherings, lunch breaks (only removing masks to eat or drink, while staying six feet apart)
- Wear any and all personal protective equipment required in your courses or at your clinical location.
- Follow the safety protocols established by your program and/or clinical site.
- Wash or sanitize your hands regularly.
- Avoid sharing equipment or supplies.
- Know the symptoms of COVID-19. Learn more from cdc.gov/coronavirus [cdc.gov].
