LANSING, Mich. — There are now 74,725 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan and 6,135 deaths, the state reported as of Tuesday.
That's up 573 cases and nine deaths from Sunday's reported numbers. Four of the deaths reported Tuesday are from a review of vital records.
Additionally, as of Monday, there are 8,243 probable cases.
In a press conference Friday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said that if cases continue to increase at this trajectory, it will not be safe for kids to go back to school in the fall.
Under the state's Return to Learn plan, students would be able to attend school face-to-face under phase 4, which all of the state is under right now. The Traverse City area and the Upper Peninsula are in phase 5.
If we move back into phase 3, classes would have to be virtual.
Whitmer also strengthened her executive order on mask requirements, which was enacted due to the rising case count in the state. The governor's office said the increased spread is due to social gatherings.
