LANSING, Mich. — The state is reporting 71,842 cases of COVID-19 and 6,101 deaths, according to numbers released Thursday.
That's an increase of 645 new cases and 16 new deaths since cases were reported Wednesday.
The 16 deaths include 13 that were discovered through an examination of records. Only 3 of the reported deaths are from over the last 24 hours.
During her Wednesday afternoon news conference, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Wednesday's increase was the biggest since May 14, two months ago. Michigan had been below 100 new cases a day as recently as July 4th.
