LANSING, Mich. — There are 244,741 total confirmed COVID-19 cases and 7,929 total deaths, the state reported Friday.

The state shattered previous single-day records on Friday with 8,516 new cases announced.

Additionally, the state reported 118 deaths, including 83 deaths identified during a Vital Records review.

Cases are rising at an exponential rate in Michigan, statewide health leaders said. On Thursday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer warned the state could hit its daily peak of COVID-19 deaths in Michigan by Christmas.

She urged Michiganders to continue to social distance, practice good hand washing and mask up.
