Editorial: Back to school time; a serious responsibility!

For most, Labor Day weekend is a signal. Summertime fun is drawing to a close. It’s time for students, teachers, parents and guardians to turn their attention to another school year and education. How we approach this serious task has direct impact on individuals and the future of Michigan!

Over two hundred years ago, President Thomas Jefferson said:

“Knowledge is power, knowledge is safety, and knowledge is happiness.”

Applied wisely, that quote from one of America’s Founding Fathers still rings true today.

Michigan has a little more than 1.6 million schoolchildren. About two-thirds of them attend a public school in their home district. The rest are divided between private and charter schools and students who cross district lines to enroll in other public districts. It’s also estimated that there are about 50-thousand homeschoolers in Michigan.

Recently, Action News held a special Detroit 2020 back-to-school town hall meeting in our state’s largest district.

The issues were wide-ranging and the passion for educating kids was clearly evident! No matter where you live, most parenting adults want the same thing for their children; a strong education and a good head start in life.

That can be achieved best by making sure children do their homework in a learning environment. Attend parent-teacher conferences on a regular basis and support our dedicated professional educators. Volunteer time at your child’s school. The most empowered schools are those where local adults, businesses and organizations are involved. That is the true meaning of the word “community.”

Together, let’s take action and pledge to make a difference in the education of all Michigan school-age children.
