Lake Superior State University has opened the first Cannabis Center of Excellence for the university's cannabis program, the first in the United States.

LSSU has partnered with Agilent Technologies Inc. to help facilitate education and research in cannabis chemistry.

The center of excellence is a state-of-the-art facility aimed that looks to increase education and research across the sciences about the growing cannabis industry.

LSSU's cannabis program is the first program in the U.S. focused solely on cannabis chemistry.

“The LSSU Cannabis Center of Excellence was created to provide a platform for our students to be at the forefront of the cannabis analytics industry,” commented Dr. Steve Johnson, Dean of the College of Science and the Environment. “The instrumentation available is rarely paralleled at other undergraduate institutions. The focus of the cannabis program is to provide our graduates with the analytical skills necessary to move successfully into the cannabis industry.”

The focus of the center will be to train undergrad students as job-ready chemists, with hands-on-, innovative experience using state-of-the-art instrumentation and protocols. Students will use Agilent's scientific instruments in their coursework and undergrad research.

Officials will hold the ribbon cutting on Friday.

LSSU does offer a cannabis chemistry degree with focuses "on the quantitative analysis of cannabis related compounds and contaminants including THC, CBD, terpenes, etc. This progressive program is offered in baccalaureate and associate degrees."
