(WXYZ) — Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM) has kicked off its 2021 Cookie Season, where girls will put to use new sales strategies and technology skills that they honed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
And there's one scout in metro Detroit who's taking on a special project to support out brave service members overseas. Her name is Elizabeth Popovich and she's been an ambassador Girl Scout
for the past 10 years. Popovich, 17, has sent cookies and donations to show the soldiers that everyone back at home cares and is always thinking of them. To learn how you can help, watch her interview in the video player above.
As the pandemic became widespread this year, many girl entrepreneurs experienced the same challenges as other businesses and quickly changed their emphasis to virtual sales. This season, girls will once again embrace their entrepreneurial spirit by selling cookies through online platforms and innovative “virtual cookie booths” on social media (with parental supervision). Many girls will also be offering socially distant or contactless sales and delivery options. If local guidelines allow, in-person sales may also be available in certain areas, keeping girls’ safety top priority. And though social distancing measures may keep families and friends apart, cookie customers can share moments of joy and stay connected with others this season by making cookie donations or shipping cookies directly to others to others in a giftbox via the Digital Cookie® online platform.
All purchases of Thin Mints®, Samoas®, Lemon-Ups® , and other Girl Scout Cookie favorites are an investment in girl leadership in your local community. With every sale, the Girl Scout Cookie Program [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com] teaches girls how to think like entrepreneurs as they run their own small businesses and learn skills like goal setting, people skills, and decision making—which are imperative for any leadership role. And girls decide how to use their portion of the proceeds for unforgettable leadership experiences and community projects, while GSSEM depends on the funds to deliver life-changing Girl Scout programming to members.
