Allow extra time to vote this election Tuesday

You'll want to allow yourself extra time when you hit the polls on this election Tuesday for a number of reasons.

The Ingham County Clerk says the county issued 35,000 absentee voter ballots and most of those were turned in as of Tuesday morning.

Local clerks report a high interest in absentee voting, which could be an indication of high voter turnout... which means there could be longer lines at the polls.

Another reason why it may take you longer is because this year there is no option for straight party voting.

A law passed in 2016 was upheld earlier this year, keeping that in place.

This means that you have to fill out your choices for every race instead of checking a box to vote for the candidates of one party.

A third reason why it may take longer is because the ballot has two sides.

There are a few things that you should know before you head to your polling place.

Make sure that you're heading to the correct location.

Voters are encouraged to bring a photo ID or voter registration card, though it's not required to have either of those.

If you don't have them, you can fill out and sign an affidavit, as long as you're in the correct polling location and registered.
