Baby born in parking lot

GRAND LEDGE, Mich. — A mother and father welcomed their third child this morning, but not at the hospital like they had planned.

The parents knew the baby was coming they were already on their way to the hospital.

But the baby didn't feel like waiting.

They pulled over in this parking lot when they realized they couldn't make it, and the father called 9-1-1.

"I just talked him through it," said Eaton County Dispatcher Hannah Hunt, "She did all the work, i just talked to him."

The Grand Ledge Fire Department arrived on scene, but not before the baby was born.

From there, the family was taken to Sparrow Hospital.

"This was the closest I've come to delivering a child," said Paramedic Andy Russian.

But wasn't for his partner Bryan Sawyer.

He helped the fore department deliver another baby in 2016.

"You think about having a baby on the side of the road...It sounds like absolute panic and chaos," Sawyer said.

He says despite that chaos, it went as smoothly as possible given the circumstances.

"While it can be scary, when everything goes so well like it did today, it's really exciting," he said.

Thanks in large part to the dispatcher who took the 9-1-1 call, and a father who helped bring his third child into the world, albeit unconventionally.

"The father did a great job with it, he was very calm and reassuring and helping his wife...he was listening to me and trying to help her at the same time,:" said Hunt. "I'm just glad that he was able to listen to me and follow what i was telling him to do."
