The seat for the 8th Congressional District is heating up and Tuesday morning, the two candidates met for a debate.
Democratic candidate Elissa Slotkin and incumbent Republican Mike Bishop met for a radio broadcasted debate.
W.I.L.S. radio in Lansing broadcast the debate to discuss topics such as spending, health care, the opioid crisis and more.
One of the more controversial subjects head into this election is Pipeline 5.
Democratic candidate Elissa Slotkin is in favor of stopping it saying "I'm in support of shutting down line 5 now. Immediately. It's proven that it's too old. It's got major vulnerabilities, it had to be shut down when the waves were too high, and I personally don't believe that we need a tunnel to replace it."
Republican Mike Bishop is in favor of it saying, "You have to provide that fuel to the upper peninsula, there's no other way around it. But the way you have to do it is the safest way, which is to dig a tunnel, separate it from the water so it's not laying on the bottom of the straights, which leaves it vulnerable to all kinds of things."
The debate did become heated between the two candidates.
"He leveled the first negative comment in his first opening comments. I just think that's what people are sick of. Mr. Bishop likes to talk and criticize my service, he likes to criticize what I was doing when I was serving my country and I'm deeply proud of that," Slotkin said.
"That's all she does is attack. She should turn on the TV and watch her ads because they're well funded attacks and personal attacks. Most of them, if not all of them are untrue. It's part of a campaign, it's just never a campaign I've seen before," Bishop added.
Slotkin is a former National Defense Official who now lives in Holly.
Bishop has held the 8th District seat since 2015.
