Many local companies will be hosting students on Friday in honor of Manufacturing Day 2018.
The events are designed to highlight manufacturing careers in the region and entice young people to look in that direction for jobs.
About 1000 middle and high school age students will visit nearly two dozen manufacturers across the Capital area.
“This is not your father’s manufacturing. It’s high-tech, bright, clean and modern,” said Virg Bernero, CAMC executive director. “We want young people to know that there are tremendous career opportunities in manufacturing right now in the Capital Region, many of which are high wage and require innovative talent. We see careers in manufacturing across the educational spectrum, from certifications and associate degrees to professional trades and apprenticeships to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Manufacturing Day is designed to highlight the fact that there is something for everyone in today’s advanced manufacturing.”
Lansing Community College’s Center for Manufacturing Excellence is also a host site this year and FOX 47 at 5:30 will be live from LCC Friday.
Manufacturing Day is a nationwide event with open houses, plant tours, and demonstrations set up at thousands of manufacturing companies across the country.
Michigan leads the nation in creating manufacturing jobs; in the last nine years Michigan has created more than 185,000 jobs in the manufacturing field.
The state says there will be over 100,000 career openings through 2024.
