JACKSON, Mich — The Jackson County Intermediate School District was awarded funds to support the November 2019 Middle School Challenge Project by the Jackson Community Foundation. The funds included a $2,000 grant from the Kellogg Foundation Youth Advisory Committee Endowment Fund and $8,000 from the Community Needs Endowment Fund.
Each year the Martin Luther King Diversity Committee, a partnership between the Jackson County ISD, the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, the Jackson Human Relations Committee and several other community partners, provides Challenge Day training to as many as 750 7th grade students from every county middle school. The program is a day-long social and emotional learning program to support students to address bullying, build empathy among students, empower students to create a school-wide culture of kindness, and enhance learning. The mission of the MLK Diversity Committee is to encourage community collaboration to reflect Dr. King’s dream and to motivate youth for service and excellence. In pursuit of its mission, the Committee sponsors the annual MLK Diversity Breakfast and the Jackson Middle School Challenge Project.
