Demolition has started on a former Target retail store at the now-closed Northland Center in Southfield.
Work is expected to be completed in two weeks before demolition is to start on a former Firestone building at the site just north of Detroit.
Target was one of the primary stores at the center before the mall closed two years ago.
Southfield bought the mall in 2015 for $2.4 million from a court-ordered receiver. City officials plan to demolish buildings and remediate the site before selling the property for redevelopment.
The city says the site has been included in a regional pitch as a potential location for Amazon's second headquarters. The Seattle-based online retail giant requested bids for the headquarters from cities across the U.S. and in Canada.
