EAST LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing Public Schools officials haven’t appeared to decide yet if the high school will reopen Wednesday after it was closed Tuesday because of threat directed at the school.
The matter remains under investigation and the East Lansing Police Department is “following up on some active leads,” East Lansing Deputy Police Chief Steve Gonzalez said.
“The decision on whether or not to have school is derived by the school district itself,” Gonzalez said.
Messages left Tuesday afternoon with East Lansing Superintendent Dori Leyko weren’t returned.
Gonzalez said police and school district officials became aware of the threat Tuesday morning – before school hours – after an email was sent to the district.
The email warned officials about a school threat the sender became aware of.
According to the Facebook post, the cancellation only affected the high school.
Gonzalez declined Tuesday to say if police have identified who sent the email, the nature of the threat and who made it.
“We always err on the side of caution with these types of things,” Gonzalez aid. “We don’t want to overreact, but we certainly don’t want to under react as well.”
Gonzalez said the threat directed at the high school didn’t require police to search the building with a K-9 unit.
As a result of the threat, East Lansing’s middle school and elementary schools had uniformed officers patrolling the campuses Tuesday while they were open.
