LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Sheriffs’ Association (MSA) has named Eaton County Sheriff Thomas Reich the 2019 Michigan Sheriff of the Year.

According to the organization's executive director Blaine A. Koops, “This is an opportunity for Michigan Sheriffs to recognize one of their own who exemplifies the Office of Michigan Sheriff.”

The nominations are judged on several criteria which include, but not limited to, unusual initiative and imagination in the performance of his/her duty.

Actions the candidate has taken to improve the stature of the Office of Sheriff locally, statewide and nationally.

Length of service is also considered but not a determining factor.

“Tom has excelled in all categories. He was Past President of the local Rotary, actively participated in “Shop with a Cop”, donated to the local library, city gardens and Veteran’s Park just to name a few of Tom’s community involvement.”

He has served on several statewide committees including the Michigan Intelligence Operations Center for Homeland Security Advisory Council to the Governor.

Sheriff Reich also serves on the State of Michigan Drug Treatment Court Committee.

He is considered a leader in Michigan regarding Deputy Body Worn Cameras programming.

Furthermore, he is pursuing a Medical Assisted Treatment (MAT) program in the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Facility.

The MAT program is a multifaceted medical approach to assist inmates with addictions using therapy, certain drugs and other medical interventions.

Koops added, “Sheriff Reich is a trailblazer in the criminal justice profession who understands the criminal justice needs of his community and acts to bring those services to his community."

Sheriff Reich started his law enforcement career as a Deputy with the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office in 1973.
