FLINT, Mich. — The planned giveaway of thousands of bottles of abandoned water in Flint is not happening.
The water bottles were found in an abandoned school building recently after having sat unattended.
FOX 47 News had reported that the building owner’s daughter said she knows the water is expired, but was hoping the community could be use it for things like gardening because it’s not safe to drink.
The Flint City Mayor, Karen Weaver, called in the State Health Department and the Department of Environmental Equality to stop her.
“No one should drink that water, no animal should either,” said Mayor Weaver. "It has a shelf life. We tell people not to keep it on the ground, have it up higher; We really want people to be aware, that could be a health issue. A public health issue."
The water was being stored there by a non-profit who had plans for a giveaway that never happened.
A water and sewer main break contaminated the donations and it sat there for years.
