A former Detroit-area police officer has been found guilty of assault in the bloody beating of a driver that was captured on dashcam video.

Jurors announced the verdict Thursday in the case of William Melendez, who was charged in the January attack on 58-year-old Floyd Dent.

Police stopped Dent for traffic violations in the Detroit suburb of Inkster, and dashcam video showed Melendez punching him in the head 16 times.

The video wasn't seen publicly until WDIV-TV aired the footage in March. Melendez was fired and Inkster agreed to pay $1.4 million to Dent, who suffered broken ribs, blood on his brain and other injuries.

Melendez was found guilty Thursday of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and misconduct in office. He was found not guilty of assault by strangulation.
