Davenport University will hold a drive-through commencement Aug. 9 to celebrate its 2020 graduates.

Graduates will be able to wear their graduation caps and gowns, walk across the stage and pose for a photo, university officials said Friday.

As with most universities across the country, a traditional commencement celebration couldn’t be held this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, so Davenport had to get creative.

“We considered several avenues to recognize our graduates,” Gilda Gely, Davenport’s provost and vice president of academic affairs, said in a news release. “But it was clear from an internal survey with graduates that they preferred to be recognized in-person and we were determined to make that request a reality.”

Over 1,600 graduates will be recognized, with the youngest being 19 and the oldest 66, according to the university.

Families will be able to ride along or watch a livestream of the event.
