LANSING, Mich. — A mid-Michigan prosecutor's office is deciding if charges will be filed against a man who shot and killed his neighbor's dog.
At 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday, officers received a 911 call from someone claiming that their dog had been shot and killed.
This went down at the 4300 block of Chadburne Drive in Lansing.
A homeowner who didn't want to be identified said his neighbor, Steve, shot and killed the pitbull.
"I heard a pop, pop again. I came out here and police started showing up. Steve shot the neighbor's dog because it was in the backyard, attacking his dog."
This neighbor said that Steve told him the pitbull dug a hole underneath the fence separating Steve's and it's owner's backyard, and then attacked Steve's 9-year-old Brittany-mix, Ellie.
"He [Steve] got Ellie inside the house. The pitbull came charging after him. He turned around and popped a couple of caps in its ***."
The pitbull's owner was visibly upset as he carried its blanket-wrapped body and gave it to Eaton County Animal Control. FOX 47 News' Carla Bayron asked him what happened, but he told her that he didn't want to talk.
"They've been pretty quiet. They keep their dogs in the backyard. Most people in this neighborhood usually got their dogs on leashes. Not many dogs usually roam the neighborhood so it's usually pretty quiet." said the neighbor who didn't want to be identified.
The neighbor also said Steve told him that Ellie is limping, but not seriously hurt.
The Lansing Police Department said no people were hurt and no one has been arrested.
Eaton County's Animal Control ordinance state that owners of vicious animals can be held liable if the animal attacks someone. A dog can be declared vicious if it has a tendency to attack people or other animals.
It's also possible that the man who shot the dog could be charged with animal cruelty.
