LANSING, Mich. — An Ingham County Commissioner has drafted a resolution to declare a climate emergency in the county.
The draft is in line with last month’s declaration that racism is a public health crisis.
Thomas Morgan, the author of the draft, said people of color are disproportionately affected by environmental issues. He said this legislation is a small action for the county to take in the fight for social justice.
“So what this does is it piggy-backs off that declaration and shows that here’s one of many that we can and should be fighting racism here in our community. One of those ways we should do it is by creating a cleaner, healthier environment for people to live in,” said Morgan.
Morgan is scheduled to present the draft at a human services committee meeting on Monday night.
