Hours before the appearance, a new John James for Senate website launched that targets Sen. Gary Peters.
An email declaring James is "officially running" for Senate in 2020 is sent out after signing up through the website.
James won the primary race in July 2018 and quickly drew attention from national Republicans. Vice President Mike Pence frequently made stops in Michigan throughout the midterm election season to support for James and he picked up the endorsement of President Donald Trump prior to the 2018 primary.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow defeated James by about 6% in 2018 general election.
James was also considered by President Trump as a candidate to be the next UN ambassador in February, but he was ultimately not selected to take the position.
“I am officially running for U.S. Senate in the state of Michigan in 2020,” said an email sent out by James’ campaign website Wednesday night. “Why? Because America is at a crossroads, and this fight is too important to sit out.”
James and Peters are both veterans; James served as a U.S. Army Apache pilot in Iraq and Peters served in the Persian Gulf with the U.S. Navy Reserves.
Peters was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014 and is up for re-election in 2020.
