MASON, Mich. — The man accused of killing two women in the Lansing area earlier in May was in court on Thursday for a preliminary exam.

Brown's attorney requested a competency evaluation.

He said that Brown has a lifelong history of mental illness and claimed that people who knew Brown had requested he get mental health treatment in the past.

Brown's attorney said that Kiernan claims to have heard voices and that he can't control his impulses.

Brown admitted to taking a lot of medication, including a strong sedative to help him sleep.

His attorney claimed that maybe Brown was off his meds or not taking them as prescribed and that is why he is requesting the competency evaluation.

Judge Thomas Boyd granted that.

Brown is charged with open murder in the beating deaths of Kaylee Brock and Julie Mooney.
