One of the criminal rings that was installing skimmers on gas pumps in mid-Michigan two years ago has been put away.
Federal prosecutors tells us a jury has convicted the last member of an eight person ring. They installed skimmers on pumps here and on the west side of the state.
The stolen card numbers were used to buy gift cards and pre-paid debit cards.
The Department of Agriculture ended up inspecting thousands of pumps across the state starting in august of 2015. At least 40 skimmers were found. They're installed inside the pump so customers won't see them.
The best way to protect yourself is to use a pump that faces the clerk and keep a close eye on your card statement.
