An online T-shirt company based in Kalamazoo will have to shut down for a year based on an agreement with the Michigan attorney general’s office.

Inspiring Clothing hadn’t fulfilled more than $38,000 worth of orders, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Tuesday.

The company has since fulfilled or refunded those orders, but it never donated a portion of sales to charity as advertised, according to Nessel’s office.

The company will also pay a $1,000 fine.

“My office remains firmly committed to protecting Michigan residents from being cheated out of their hard-earned money or from paying for products online that never show up at their doorsteps,” Nessel said. “Whether they are operating a major corporate enterprise or a mom-and-pop shop, my office will aggressively enforce Michigan’s consumer protection laws to keep businesses and entrepreneurs honest and to protect Michiganders’ pocketbooks.”

More than 100 consumers complained to the Better Business Bureau about Inspiring Clothing, including at least 14 Michigan residents.

Complaints allege that months went by without communication from the owner and customers were left waiting for their orders to be fulfilled, or to receive refunds.

The owner says all orders have now been either fulfilled or refunded.
