Sometimes real Christmas trees are not the best option for those with allergies or special needs. That's why a family in Coopersville has been collecting artificial ones to help people celebrate. Duane Young says his two kids, Kaylin and BJ, started the drive this summer.
"We just felt it was the type of magic we'd like to give to kids that can't experience it,” said Young.
They're hosting an "Artificial Christmas Tree Stand" event Saturday, November 28th, by appointment. Local families or those with special needs children can stop by and pick one out for free or a donation.
"We put together a collection of Christmas trees for families with special needs kids where they can come and pick one out, we know from experience having special needs family members ourselves that kids like to go and cut down trees but maybe don't have the ability to do so or maybe their respatory issues don't allow them to have a real tree in the house."
It's basically like a real Christmas tree hunt right on their property. So far they've collected about 40 trees.
"It's about making sure the kids that are going to get trees are comfortable, happy and can experience something they never thought they could experience."
When asked his favorite holiday, Duane laughed and said, "Christmas. My favorite holiday is Christmas I don't know about them."
If they don't get rid of all the trees on Saturday, they will still take requests all week and then donate any leftovers to Goodwill.
