In an email sent to graduating students, Grand Valley State University announced Monday evening that they will be hosting a "Move the Tassel" and Celebratory Drive event to honor Fall 2020 graduates.

The celebration will be partially held online and partially held in person.

Festivities kick off on Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m., as all graduates, families and supporters are invited to join a virtual commencement ceremony.

Those looking to join can take part in the virtual commencement on Facebook or YouTube. Links will be shared closer to the event on GVSU's commencement website.

The celebration will continue the following day, as graduates and four guests are invited to the Allendale Campus Fieldhouse Arena to participate in a traditional graduation ceremony.

Graduates are invited to attend on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., where they can walk across the commencement stage and move their tassel to signify the graduation.

In an effort to social distance and maintain the health and safety for all students, guests, and staff, graduates are required to reserve a time to take part in Saturday’s events based on the college from which they will graduate.

Graduates will receive an invitation to RSVP in November and are advised to select a specific time to participate with other graduates from their college.

Professional photos will be taken as each graduate crosses the stage while their name is announced. Graduates and their guests can then participate in a celebratory drive through campus to relive the fond memories of their alma mater.

The Saturday event will be live-streamed, with more details in the coming months available to graduates here.

Regalia can be purchased through the GVSU’s Oakhall Order Form Online. While tassels for undergraduates will be provided at the event, all other graduation mementos may be purchased on the Commencement Mementos page.

Students must apply for graduation to participate in the celebratory events, as more information will be sent to those who apply.

Graduates who intend to have their name printed in the formal Commencement program should submit their application for graduation by Friday, October 23.
