State parks to close as lakeshore fireworks display plans continue

A lake-side fireworks display is drawing attention from the community and local law enforcement.

The 4th of July Fireworks display on the South Pier at Holland State Park is expected to continue as planned, but anyone hoping to watch from shore will not be able to do so inside the state parks this year.

The Michigan DNR and Ottawa County Sheriff's Office announced the closing times for state parks will be strictly enforced to mitigate possible COVID-19 spread. Starting at 8 p.m. park officials will be reducing parking capacity by 25% and asking people to leave promptly at 10 p.m.

With the expected heat and many community displays canceled, a beach-side 4th of July is likely going to be the choice of many in West Michigan.

Typically the state parks stay open later on the weekend of the display to allow beach goers to see the fireworks, but outdoor events drawing over 100 people are prohibited by Executive Orders issued June 1st.

Boaters can stay out on the water so long as their boats are capable of driving after dark and people will be allowed to stay on their own property to watch the display. Groups parked on state park property should expect to be asked to leave.
