LANSING, Mich. — At first glance, the new logo for the city of Lansing needs a bit of context.

"Can you explain it to me?” Asked Gary Smith.

"Wow. That's very interesting,” said Leusa Jones.

Mayor Andy Schor says the logo represents the smokestacks at Eckert Power Station in Reo Town.

"Oh okay,” said Smith. “See, now that I know that, that's kind of cool."

"I think it's very modern, and progressive,” said Jones. “I like the contrast between the white and the black. And it seems like it can be used for a lot of different things."

But, even with a bit of an explanation, some think...

"It still doesn't say a whole lot about Lansing itself," said Joanne Von Werder.

Schor thinks it fits well. To him, the logo signifies progress: a sort of new beginning.

"It’s got a growth piece of it, as it's an upward progress," he said.

"Trying to focus on new businesses here in Lansing is important," said Smith.

"I’m curious to know whose idea it was, and where it goes from here," said Von Werder.
