Cuts are expected to begin at select GM plants today.
According to documents filed with Michigan in late 2019, Monday kicks off a two-week window in which 600-plus workers will be laid off at the Hamtramck plant — an additional 50 workers will be laid off at the Brownstown plant that manufacturers batteries.
The moves are part of GM’s effort to cut its workforce by 15-percent.
The move comes as GM announced an $8.1 billion profit in 2018, but the outlook of the company is changing as they restructure to focus on electric vehicles and autonomous vehicle production in the future.
Cuts have already taken place at the GM Tech Center in Warren and at GM headquarters in downtown Detroit. Plants in Ohio and Oshawa, Ontario, will also be affected by the moves. GM has stated that workers will have the opportunity to take jobs at other plants with openings, GM training opportunities or tuition assistance in some cases.
