Magic Johnson Foundation hosts Holiday Hope for kids and families

Posted

The Magic Johnson Foundation and United Health Care brought a little holiday joy to Lansing students and struggling families.

The event Holiday Hope took place at Everett High School Monday.

Excited screams and hollers of joy when Magic Johnson revealed to Lansing students that they were getting brand new bikes.

"When they started screaming and yelling and knowing they were gonna get a bike today," Magic Johnson said. "It's a great feeling."

"I started crying the minute that screen went up," Superintendent of Lansing Public Schools, Yvonne Caamal Canul said. "And those kids were just screaming with joy when they saw all those bicycles."

The Magic Johnson Foundation didn't just give the kids bikes either. They provided the students with food, presents and even Santa came.

It was all about giving back to the people of Michigan.

"I'm all about the state of Michigan," Magic said. "I'm all about Lansing and I'm just happy to be a part of this great community."

Volunteers packed up food and toys to help out families who needed a little extra help through the holidays.

"Everybody is here supporting this effort," Magic said. "And we just come together to bring a smile to somebody else's face."

Cars lined up with families in need, waiting on hope and a little bit of magic.

"The families that come through here are so overwhelmed with joy," Johnathan Langley, a volunteer said. "Some come through crying."
Magic personally helped pack the cars.

"Giving is good, but he's actually there giving and loading the cars," Jonathan said. "He's just one of the volunteers. You wouldn't even be able to tell the difference."

And this is a time of year where every little bit helps.
