On Thursday the Senate Transportation Committee approved a bill to honor fallen Ingham County Sheriff's Deputy Grant Whitaker.

Whitaker was killed in a December 2014 crash while he was chasing a fleeing vehicle.

The bill was introduced by Senator Curtis Hertel Jr. and will now go to the Senate floor for a full a vote.

If the bill passes both the Michigan Senate and the House of Representatives, part of Highway M-52 in Stockbridge would be renamed to honor Whitaker.

Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth says this memorial would be special because it would be in Whitaker's home.

"This roadway runs right through where Grant grew up, the community that made Grant who he was and where tragically, ultimately he lost his life. So to have this highway run right through the community that made Grant a big part of who Grant was makes it even more special".

Whitaker's mother Mary says a memorial would help with the healing process.

For a brief second, you may see his name if you were a classmate or a friend of his or someone who knew him in the community. Just that moment of remembering. It's very important to us to know that he isn't forgotten", said Mary Whitaker.

Curtis Hertel Jr., the senator who sponsored the bill said he hopes it can pass before December, the anniversary of Whitaker's death.
