Michigan State Police are trying to help step up security at churches and places of worship in the wake of the deadly church shooting in Texas.

The department is holding a one-day training session in December focused on security issues and helping churches prevent attacks.

Police say the days of congregations having an open-door policy should be numbered. The training session will cover six topics including the importance of adding security teams, setting up criminal background checks, and placing security around buildings.

The Michigan State Police training session will be held at the Training Academy in Lansing on December 14 and is open to all clergy and people who would be involved in security at congregations.

Registration costs $100 and is open until December 1.
