LANSING, Mich. — Pension debts are partly to blame for less road maintenance according to State Rep. Gary Howell.
He introduced a bill in the House that would allocate money towards the payment of those pensions on Wednesday.
He says that right now many of the road commissions have huge pension debts and the money being used to pay those debts is coming from the road funding.
"These debts have to be paid, " he said. "So that billion dollars has to come out of road commission funds instead of towards fixing the roads."
He added that they are trying to find a different source of revenue between the state and locals to pay the existing debt and not take it all out of road funds.
