LANSING, Mich. — Potter Park Zoo's baby rhino has a name!
The baby calf was named Jaali.
Jaali, means “powerful” in Swahili.
The name is pronounced like the word "jolly."
People were able to vote for their favorite by donating $5. Potter Park Zoo said the naming contest brought in over $10,000, which will go towards the animal health program at the zoo.
“We really enjoyed watching our supporters get excited about naming this calf,” Amy Morris-Hall, Potter Park Zoological Society Executive Director said. “And the funding we received for our animal health program will be very helpful to the work we do.”
Jaali is one of only 54 black rhinos in accredited zoos.
According to the zoo, Jaali has a spunky attitude and has been playing with his mom Doppsee.
