STOCKBRIDGE, Mich. — The community of Stockbridge is facing a few violations when it comes to recycling.
In 2018 they started a program where locals could take their recyclables daily to a facility but that has since changed.
CG Lantis, the Stockbridge Township Supervisor tells FOX 47 News they might bring the recycling program back, but only if the community can follow their rules.
"If things get better you know, maybe we can bring it back more often you know every other weekend or something," said Lantis.
Last year when the program began things went really well with the community, but then the township board started to notice a lot of issues.
"We had some issues with illegal dumping wrong materials large commercial box trucks coming in and dumping theirs, taking it away from the citizens," said Lantis.
The township board even put in some security measures around the facility.
"We even put in a camera on the backside of our fire and ambulance building the S.A.E.S.A and to police unfortunately what was happening," said Lantis.
One Stockbridge resident didn't want to give her name but tells us that she has been driving to another community to bring her recyclables.
"I don't like driving to Chelsea to recycle I mean I live like three blocks from here."
Another resident tells us he also drives out of town for recycling and hopes that the recycling program will come back to the community.
"I hope Stockbridge brings it back and people take advantage of it," said Chuck Bumpus.
The township supervisor says that the recycling will come back.
"We will definitely bring it back, I think the board members are all on board for the program, it's just getting it under control," said Lantis.
Local residents are still able to take recyclable items to the Stockbridge facility, but only on the second Saturday of the month.
The Stockbridge Township also started a yearly community clean up to take other kinds of recyclables.
The next cleanup is September 28th at the Stockbridge recycling facility.
