Residents in Fowlerville are allowed back home following a silo fire.

Crews were concerned over pesticides inside the building.

FOX 47's Cryss Walker spoke with witnesses who say it all started with what sounded like an explosion.

In a town where many residents say nothing ever happens, a silo fire has made this a Memorial Day witnesses say they'll never forget.

“I was outside and saw and heard the explosion and things fly off the building that were on fire”, said Lynn Scarlett who was working at the nearby Smoke House shop when the fire ignited.

Lauren Vanburen is a resident in the area who said she was shocked when she took a peek behind her backyard.

“I looked out the window and saw black smoke all up here above all the silos and then we came outside and it was right here in our backyard”, Vanburen said.

Monday afternoon fire crews worked in 90 degree temperatures to extinguish a fire at Fowlerville Feed and Pet Supplies.

Fowlerville Area Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Feig says the fire left behind a lot of damage.

“The building is gone, the cart is destroyed…an adjacent grain dryer (to the building) very heavily damaged, probably destroyed”, explained the Deputy Chief.

Lisa Stebbins, owner of Smoke House in Fowlerville says she knew something was wrong when she smelled burning wires, prompting her to call 911.

Stebbins also says she was concerned about the possibility of the fire spreading to her business and neighboring buildings.

“I was just fearing for people that were here to get them evacuated as fast as I could”, Stebbins continued.

Deputy Fire Chief Feig told News 10 that no one was inside at the time of the blaze and no one was injured.

A cart inside a storage building there caught fire, crews say they have no idea how.
