Split merge makes ramp short and dangerous

Posted

It's been a week with the split merge system on I-96 between 496 and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, but the ramp to get to it can be dangerous.

A car ran into a semi while trying to merge onto I-96 East Saturday morning.

Some drivers say ramp is too short, and they don't have enough time to get over.

"There is slightly tighter movements through there," said Kari Arend from the Michigan Department of Transportation Monday.

She says they put drivers in close quarters to make room for construction crews to work.

They're fixing up bridges between U.S. 127 and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. through August.

No one was hurt Saturday, but the accident put the new plan on Arend's radar.

"We will definitely keep an eye on the traffic," Arend said. "We'll make modifications as needed as we can through there, but we just remind motorists to really slow down and pay attention through that work zone, as it is an active work zone."

She, and the State Police are warning drivers to be extra careful.

"Try to plan for the worst," said Tpr. Ben Schwalm from Michigan State Police. He patrols on motorcycle, and tries not to ride near I-96 and Cedar St. because it's known for accidents.

And replacing on ramps with construction barrels doesn't help.

"It's important to pay attention to the signs, and plan ahead," Tpr. Schwalm said. "If you know you're driving through a construction zone, leave a couple minutes earlier in case it gets congested."

And most importantly, take it slow, so you don't put construction crews, or yourself at risk in an already dangerous interchange.
