LANSING, Mich. — Driving on icy roads is one of the most dangerous parts of the ice storm that's on the way.

Before the winter weather hit back in November, we got some safe driving advice from Michigan State Police.

Here are some tips for driving on slick roads if your vehicle begins to skid.

• Make sure your hands are on 9 and 3 on the steering wheel.
• Look in the direction you want to go and steer.
• Turn your front wheels in the same direction as the rear of the vehicle is sliding

The key is to be quick, hand over hand, to stop the skid and regain traction.

Police also recommend keeping a good distance between you and other vehicles, and drive slow so you're in control of your car.

Keep in mind, you should have no distractions, like using your cell phone or snacking.

Winter prep starts before you put the key in the ignition.

Make sure your tires treads are in good condition, and that your air pressure is where it should be.
