The deadline to register for the Michigan General Election is Tuesday, Oct. 9, and we have a step-by-step guide to getting you registered to vote before then. The general election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Step 1
The first step is verifying that you're eligible to vote in Michigan. You be all of the following below:
- A U.S. citizen
- At least 18 years old by Election Day (Nov. 6)
- A Michigan resident
- A resident of the city or township where you are applying to register to vote
If you meet all of those qualifications, you can continue on to step two. To check if you are already registered, visit Michigan.gov/vote.
Step 2
Step two is filling out an application. They can be found at a local Secretary of State office, local county, city or township clerk office, voter registration drives, several state agency offices or online at Michigan.gov/sos.

You must have the same address on your voter registration and driver's license.
Step 3
Next you have to submit the application to your local city or township clerk's office. If you hand-deliver it, the staff person helping you will take it from there.
If you mail in your application, you must also enter your driver's license number or person identification card number where requested the form or send a photo copy of one of the following forms of ID with the application:
- A photocopy of your driver's license or personal ID card
- A photocopy of a paycheck stub, utility bill, bank document or government document that lists both your name and your address.
Step 4
Next, the city or township clerk will process your voter registration application and send you a voter registration card. Keep it in your wallet or purse so you know where to go to cast the ballot.
Step 5
You can vote! Now, you will be asked to present voter identification on Election Day when you go to vote. If you don't have an ID, you can sign an affidavit. Acceptable forms of ID include:
- Michigan driver's license
- Michigan personal identification card
- Driver's license or personal identification card issued by another state
- Federal or state government-issued photo identification
- U.S. passport
- Military identification card with photo
- Student identification with photo from a high school or an accredited institution of higher education, such as a college or university
- Tribal identification card with photo.
