Former State Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer will be Michigan’s 49th governor as she defeated current Attorney General Bill Schuette in the midterm elections on Tuesday. That's according to the Associated Press.
The 47-year-old Democrat will succeed Gov. Rick Snyder, who has served in office since his election in 2010.
Whitmer previously served in both the state House and state Senate as well as the Ingham County prosecutor.
She will be inaugurated as governor during the swearing-in ceremony on New Year’s Day in Lansing.
