Schuette in Lansing congratulates Whitmer on win

Recent polls have consistently showed Whitmer in the lead. However, Schuette’s campaign repeatedly said they were not worried — and that he was going to win.

Those sails were deflated a bit tonight, when FOX News earlier called the race for Whitmer. When the AP called the race about an hour later, around 10 oh clock, the mood in the room changed.

He came out to speak to supporters about 20 minutes later and joked he would have to save his victory speech for another day.

He said he also called and congratulated Whitmer on the race.

Certainly not the outcome the Republicans had hoped for tonight — with even as of a few hours ago, saying the numbers were just early and that things would turn around.
